1 Hike on Sólheimajökull Glacier

With nearly 11% of the country covered by glaciers, it’s no surprise that glacier trekking is one of the most popular adventure sports in the country. Set in the southern part of Iceland, the five-mile-long Sólheimajökull is one of the most popular for hiking thanks to its vast expanse and accessibility.

Taking a tour of the otherworldly landscape of blue ridges, deep crevices, and trickling pure waterfalls is an experience that you won’t soon forget. While you are in the area, be sure to visit the dramatic 60-foot Skógafoss waterfall or the spectacular Reynisfjara beach with its volcanic black sand. Interestingly, the beach was a major filming spot for the Hollywood film Noah starring Russel Crowe.

2 Snorkel or scuba diving in Silfra fissure

Just off Thingvellir National Park, the Silfra fissure is where the North American and European tectonic plates meet. For centuries the two plates have drifted apart at around two centimeters per year creating a sizable gap. This is the only place on Earth you can snorkel or dive between these two sections of the earth’s crust. Silfra also has the clearest freshwater and longest freshwater visibility on the planet, so you’ll be able to see and experience every inch of the Silfra Fissure with ease. It is no wonder it is considered one of the best places for diving in the world.

3 Bathe in the geothermal Secret Lagoon

The Secret Lagoon in Iceland’s Golden Circle is a wonderful place to relax and unwind after a busy day’s exploring. This man-made swimming pool is also Iceland’s oldest, having been open since 1891. It is fed by nearby natural hot springs so the water stays at a warm 38-40° Celsius (around 100° Fahrenheit) all year long. You will also find a geyser near the lagoon that erupts dramatically every few minutes.

The Secret Lagoon is undoubtedly one of the best places in Iceland where you can enjoy the volcanic scenery in comfort. There are also several modern facilities around the lagoon, including a restaurant and bar.

4 Search for the Northern Lights on a Super Jeep tour

The Aurora Borealis or the Northern Lights only occur in a few parts of the northern hemisphere. It is one of the top things to do in Iceland as you can get fantastic views of this magical natural phenomenon. September to March is the best time to see this spectacular display of light. However, keep in mind that even if you visit the country at the right time of year, you’re not guaranteed to see it everywhere.

On a Super Jeep excursion, however, you and an expert guide can go off the beaten track, away from the crowds and light pollution, to experience the Aurora Borealis. Starting from Reykjavik, the Jeep takes you deep into the countryside for an intimate viewing experience, greatly increasing your chances of seeing the lights.

5 Learn about Icelandic Folklore in Borgarfjörður Eystri

Scandinavian Vikings were the first settlers in Iceland and their customs, superstitions, and culture can be seen across the country today. According to local legend, the picturesque fjord of Borgarfjörður Eystri is said to be the home of a population of elves or “hidden people” from Viking lore, who live in the many rocks and boulders in the area. One such rock, Kirkjusteinn, is believed to be a church for these elves. Whether you believe in elves or not, this is one of Iceland’s picturesque hidden gems, with a panoramic viewpoint at the top of Álfaborg offering fantastic views of the fjord. There are numerous other landmarks connected to elves in the region and taking an elfin-walk with an expert is the ideal way to learn the stories and legends.

6 Travel to the Arctic Circle on Grimsey Island

The small Grassy island of Grimsey, straddling the Arctic Circle off the north coast of the mainland, has a strange, magical quality to it. Thanks to its geographical location, in the summer months of June and July, the sun never really sets or rises, making this the perfect spot to view the midnight sun!

But this isn’t the only reason to visit Grimsey: although very few people live on the island, it is home to over one million seabirds such as puffins, arctic terns, and razorbills. Given its extreme northern location as well as the lack of pollution, Grimsey is also a fantastic place to see the Northern Lights between September and March.

7 Discover the local fauna of Iceland

Not just spectacular landscapes, Iceland is home to several unique species as well. Westmann Island, off the southern coast, is home to possibly the world’s largest colony of Atlantic Puffins that you can visit. The country is also famous for horses and riding these animals across the beautiful countryside in summer can be an unforgettable experience.

Iceland is also one of the world’s best destinations to go whale watching. During the months of April to October, these waters are rife with breaching humpback and minke whales, visible just a short boat ride away from shore.

8 Be inspired by the creative street art in Reykjavik

Iceland’s beautiful capital city of Reykjavik has a vibrant creative energy, exemplified by the numerous pieces of world-class street art that adorn buildings around town. These aren’t just casual pieces of graffiti but genuine artistic marvels, and often a result of international collaboration. For example, the Wall Poetry project was a collaboration between the Iceland Airwaves music festival and the Berlin-based Urban Nation art collective, to encourage artistic exchange. The streets of Reykjavik are teeming with graffiti, murals, and even rooftop tags, especially in the downtown area, which offers a real glimpse into the contemporary culture of Iceland.

9 Kayak along the Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Take a kayak ride along the coast of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and you will be rewarded with glimpses of fascinating sights. As you paddle on, puffins and other seabirds gently soar above you. The kayak glides by a dramatic half-submerged shipwreck, and you can see the gorgeous shoreline in the distance. You will also pass the rocky Breiðafjöður bay with its diverse wildlife and the charming lighthouse that has stood sentinel for decades. The beautiful scenery, wildlife, and wonderfully tranquil ambiance make this sea kayaking excursion one of the top things to do in Iceland, also one that you don’t need any prior experience for!

10 Eat langoustine during the Höfn Lobster Festival

If you are a fan of lobster, Iceland is the perfect place for you. In late June every year, the charming small fishing town of Hofn hosts a celebration for this internationally craved shellfish. We recommend trying Langoustine, otherwise known as the Norwegian Lobster, with a delightfully rich taste and delicate texture. During the festival, this little town comes alive with events, concerts and activities, however, if your tastes tend toward more isolated, offbeat experiences, we also recommend a visit to the stunning Vatnajökull National Park with its glaciers, caves, mountains and lagoons.

The Land of Ice and Fire rewards even the most intrepid travelers with fantastic experiences. Our destination experts are happy to curate and consolidate some of these best things to do in Iceland to match your interests. Contact us!
