Svalbard Explorer: Best of High Arctic Norway

Over the next seven days, cruise the frigid waters off the coast of Spitsbergen in search of the various wildlife species that inhabit the region. As you glide along the western side of the island, pass by gorgeous fjords and large glaciers. The area is a prime wildlife viewing spot and home to numerous species of polar flora and fauna including polar bears. In the warmer months, you might chance upon colorful wildflowers. Some of the destinations en route include the 14th of July Glacier, the whaling settlement of Smeerenburg and the Hinlopen Strait known for its pack ice. All these spots are rich in wildlife and make for great photo opportunities. Sea kayaking and paddling excursions are also available. There are also the majestic cliffs of Alkefjellet, home to thousands of Brinnich’s guillemots. Keep an eye out for pinnipeds such as walrus. On a lucky day, you might witness a walrus ‘haul out’, wherein the mammals take a break from the sea and gather in large groups on the shore or on ice. On the last day of your Arctic cruise, enjoy breakfast while the vessel docks in Longyearbyen. After, say goodbye to the ship’s expedition team, disembark and hop on the charter flight that will take you back to Helsinki for your onward journey. Once you reach Helsinki, you could also opt to stay one night in the city if you like.
