Summer – The months from May to September are the best times to visit Kyrgyzstan and also the most popular. Weather conditions are perfect for hiking and sightseeing; temperatures are in the 80s and 90s, the skies are clear and the sun shines bright. Mountain passes open up and it’s the best time to travel to Kyrgyzstan for outdoor activities.
Spring and Fall – Kyrgyzstan experiences spring from March to April and fall from October to November. The latter half of spring and the first half of fall are good periods to visit the country. The landscape is particularly striking – snow-capped mountains against a foreground of flower-laden meadows in spring and a landscape awash in shades of yellows, browns and reds during fall. Temperatures are cooler and ideal for sightseeing. Depending on the month, some mountain roads might be inaccessible.
Winter – Kyrgyzstan experiences a bitterly cold winter season with sub-zero temperatures and plenty of snow. While the snow-draped mountainscapes make for a magical sight, travel is limited due to road closures and bad weather conditions. Ski season is in full swing and the country makes for an offbeat and picturesque skiing holiday destination.
The key to packing for a trip to Kyrgyzstan is layering. There are considerable differences in temperatures at different altitudes, and having layers will allow you to dress warm or cool depending on weather conditions. If hiking and outdoor activities are part of your itinerary, pack good-quality hiking pants, long-sleeved T-shirts, and hiking shoes. Weather conditions can change without warning, so it’s best to carry rain gear such as a waterproof jacket and hiking pants. A lightweight fleece jacket will be handy for cooler nights in the mountains.
In urban areas such as Bishkek, denim, T-shirts or tops and dresses work well. If you are planning on visiting a place of worship, pack a scarf and clothing that covers your shoulders and knees.
