Next, see the distinctively shaped Provincial Legislature building that is located close to the waterfront. From the sprawling premises, take in splendid views of the city and the Beagle Channel. Your guide will then show you around ancient houses belonging to the first Feugian families who lived here. The last stop on your itinerary is the museum complex of the Ushuaia prison. The prison was shut down in 1947 and now houses five museums and an art gallery. Browse the Maritime Museum and learn about the rich seafaring heritage of the region. At the Prison Museum, walk the narrow corridors and look inside the cells that once housed notorious criminals. After, drive back to your hotel. Favorite hikes include Cerro Torre (medium level trek) and Laguna de los Tres (difficult level trek) which leads up to the stunning lagoons at the base of Mount Fitz Roy. Go on an unforgettable journey into the Patagonian ice world and enjoy a trek on the surface of the Perito Moreno Glacier. At the scheduled time you will be driven to Los Glaciares National Park. Once you arrive at Bajo de las Sombras port, sail down the Rico Arm of Lake Argentino to the glacier. Your expert mountain guides will meet you and lead you to a shelter with a view of the glacier. Then set out on a trek along the lake’s coast. Watch out for ice calving and listen to a talk about glaciology. On arrival at the side of the glacier, you will be split into groups of 20. Strap on your helmets and crampons and climb on to the glacier’s surface. Your guide will give you a safety briefing and help you get to know the glacier better. Learn about the flora and fauna of the region and spot a variety of glacier features such as deep cracks, blue moulins, and turquoise ponds. On your way back, sail close to the south wall of the glacier and spend an hour on the footbridges in front of the glacier. Navigate the turquoise waters of Lake Argentino, sailing past floating icebergs as you venture deep into the national park en route to the remote Estancia Cristina. Once at the estancia, learn its history on a brief tour of its museum before embarking on an adventurous 4x4 excursion ascending the mountains to the breathtaking viewpoint of the Upsala Glacier. Marvel at the enormity of this icy giant framed by the dark, rugged mountains of southern Patagonia. Descend back to the estancia and return to El Calafate by evening. (07:30 to 20:00.
