Best time to visit South Korea by season

Spring – March to May: The first signs of spring appear by the end of March as pink and white cherry blossoms bloom in the southern part of the country and make their way to the northern parts by early April. Temperatures during this season are mainly in the 60s and low 70s, with clear and dry weather conditions. In short, it is perfect for sightseeing. Most cities celebrate the arrival of spring with cherry blossom festivals and other events. Predictably, it is the busiest and best time to visit South Korea.

Summer – June to August: Summers in South Korea can be incredibly hot and humid. Temperatures are in the 80s, and humidity is around 90-100% during July and August. The country also receives the maximum rainfall during this period. The locals respond by heading to coastal cities such as Busan and Jeju Island. With schools closed and families taking annual vacations, domestic travel is at its peak.

Autumn – September to November: Come fall, South Korea’s cities and national parks don shades of yellow, orange, and red. Low rainfall levels, cool temperatures, and relatively lean crowds during these months make traveling to South Korea a great choice. It’s the perfect time for city exploration and outdoor activities such as hiking. Daytime temperatures are typically in the 60s and 70s.

Winter – December to February: Fall colors give way to an expanse of white as the northern parts and mountains receive their first round of snow in December. Daytime temperatures are usually in the 30s and 40s but can dip into the single digits at higher altitudes. This doesn’t stop locals from enjoying the best of the season: festive celebrations and the chance to ski down world-class slopes keep the mood upbeat.

What to pack for a trip to South Korea?

Since temperatures and weather conditions vary significantly from season to season, what you pack for your trip to South Korea depends mainly on when you visit the country.

If you are traveling during the peak travel seasons of spring and autumn, pack layers that you can put on or take off depending on the weather. A sweater or light jacket is advisable for chilly mornings and evenings.

High humidity levels during summertime call for light, breathable fabrics, so pack outfits made of natural materials such as cotton and linen. Be sure to pack rainwear, such as a jacket or an umbrella, as the summer months also see the maximum rainfall in the country. Winters in South Korea are biting cold, with temperatures often falling below freezing. Get your warmest jackets, sweaters, thermals, caps, and gloves if you are visiting during the winter months.

The dress code in South Korea is casual yet slightly conservative. Pack modest clothes that provide good coverage, especially if you plan to visit temples and other religious sites. Sightseeing in the country requires a lot of walking, so bring a pair of comfortable shoes.
