Seasons in Türkiye

Spring: Starting in April, Türkiye’s countryside becomes a carpet of green. The blooming of tulips and wildflowers lends the country an incredible palette of colors. It is the best time to visit Istanbul; the city welcomes spring with a spectacular tulip festival. With temperatures in the 60s, clear skies, and lean crowds, it is one of the best seasons to travel to Türkiye for hiking, sightseeing, and visiting the country’s ancient ruins.

Summer: Temperatures move into the 80s and even the 90s in some regions. Fabulous seaside resorts, vibrant coastal cities, and the sparkling blue waters of the Turquoise Coast and Bodrum Peninsula make it the best time to visit Türkiye’s beach towns. With schools in Europe and the US closing for summer, it is also a busy time along Türkiye’s coastline. However, high daytime temperatures make inland sightseeing and city exploration uncomfortable.

Fall: The autumn months, from September to October, are one of the best times to travel to Türkiye. Lesser crowds and ideal daytime and water temperatures make it a perfect period for sightseeing, hiking, and water activities.

Winter: Significant variations in temperatures and weather conditions exist across the country. Cities like Cappadocia see daytime temperatures drop into the 30s along with snowfall, while coastal towns are comfortable with readings in the mid-to-high 50s. Activity is mainly centered around ski resorts, but across the rest of the country, it is slow and quiet.

What to Pack for a Trip to Türkiye

Türkiye experiences significant variations from season to season and between geographical locations, so what you pack depends mainly on when you visit the country and what you plan to do.

Summers in Türkiye can get hot, so it’s best to opt for clothes made from natural fabrics like cotton and linen. Swimwear is a must if you are visiting Türkiye’s beach towns, but pack a cover-up for when you have to step into town.

If you are visiting during spring and autumn, we recommend packing layers to account for differences in day and night time temperatures and between regions. Hiking in Türkiye during these seasons can be particularly rewarding. Pack a pair of good-quality trekking shoes and clothes.

If you are planning a winter trip to Türkiye, take a few warm layers. It can get quite cold in Istanbul, Cappadocia, and other high-altitude destinations.

While Türkiye is not a conservative country, attire covering the head, shoulders, and knees is required while visiting mosques and other religious sites.
