Language in Jordan

The official language of Jordan is Arabic, and most Jordanians speak one of several vernacular Arab dialects. However, English is widely used and known across the country, especially in major tourist destinations like Amman and the Dead Sea. Additionally, when you have our expert guides accompanying you on your tours, you don’t need to worry about communication problems in the country.

Cash and Currency

The Jordanian Dinar (JOD or دينار أردني; in Arabic) is the official currency of the country. A Dinar is usually broken down into 10 dirhams, 100 qirsh (also called piastres) or 1,000 fulus. The Jordanian Dinar is pegged to the US Dollar, which is also widely accepted throughout the country.

Credit cards are accepted at hotels, restaurants and larger shops. Please note that many local businesses still prefer cash payment in the Jordanian currency. While some small shops in tourist areas may accept credit cards, if you plan to shop in markets it’s best to carry some cash.

Currency regulations for tourists in Jordan: Currency restrictions for entry: Declaration required if carrying more than JOD 10,000 or equivalent in other currencies

Currency restrictions for exit: None

Tipping

Tipping is not mandatory in Jordan. However, like in most countries around the world, it is good manners to tip for exceptional service, especially in hotels or restaurants. In Petra, there are horse rides available at the entry point. Please note that a tip of $5-$10 is expected for this activity.

Health Information

If you have symptoms of any respiratory illnesses during your Jordan vacation, make sure to contact a doctor as soon as possible. Monitor the media for information on latest developments and follow the advice of the local authorities.

Remember to avoid consuming products that may have been contaminated with camel secretions, and wash your hands regularly before and after touching animals. Waterborne, foodborne, insect-borne and other infectious diseases are prevalent. They include hepatitis, typhoid, measles and sandfly fever. Drink only boiled or bottled water and avoid eating any raw or undercooked food. Ensure your accommodation is insect-proof, and keep an insect repellent handy with you all times.

Amman has high-quality private medical services. Outside major cities, however, healthcare services are basic. Paramedic and ambulance services are basic compared to countries like the US, the UK and Australia. If you’re seriously ill or injured, you might need medical evacuation. You may also have to pay up-front, so ensure that your travel insurance covers medical emergencies.

For other regular medical requirements, it is advisable to carry your own medication and any other medicines that you may need during your Jordan vacation. Although major cities like Amman have adequate pharmacies and healthcare facilities, you may have limited access to pharmacies and healthcare centers in remote locations like deserts and villages.

Dress Code

We advise visitors to dress modestly and rather conservatively especially in the less visited parts of the country. Jordan is a Muslim country and what is considered appropriate in terms of clothing (especially for women) is conservative by western standards. Unless you are in a beach resort, we recommend wearing lightweight trousers and shirts that cover the shoulders. It will also help you to avoid unwanted attention.

Our destination experts are always on hand to advise you further on local customs in each destination on your Jordan vacation itinerary. Contact us today for the latest updates and travel information on Jordan.
