Start your day with a visit to Marae Arahurahu, a restored, ancient religious site set against a picturesque backdrop. As you walk around the grounds, your guide will tell you about age-old Polynesian customs, beliefs and traditions. Other landmarks include the fern-filled caverns of Mara’a Grotto, believed to have inspired Impressionist painter Paul Gauguin, and the black sand beach, a favorite with surfers. There is also the Water Gardens of Vaipahi, home to archeological sites, numerous species of flora and fauna, and a small waterfall. Learn about ancient legends associated with the nearby Vaima River and its religious significance in Tahitian culture. Learn about Polynesian history, culture, economy, and traditions on this tour of Huahine Island. Your expert guide will pick you up from your hotel at the appointed time. Head to the village of Maeva, where the district chiefs once lived and worshiped their ancestors side by side. View the 200 ancient stone structures that lie along the shore of Lake Fauna Nui and on the sacred Matairea Hill. Stop at the museum to learn about the first outside visitors to Polynesia. Then visit a vanilla plantation to see how the plant is cultivated. Your guide will also show you traditional stone fish traps still used by some fishermen on the island. Continue to Marae Manunu, the site of the tomb of Raiti, the last great priest from Maeva village. Then visit Faie, the home of the sacred blue eyed eels. Make your way to Belvedere viewpoint for classic views of the bay of Maroe and enjoy the view of Huahine lagoon from the Mahuti viewpoint. Your guide will also take you to Marae Anini. Reserved for kings, the marae is located along a small white sand beach by the lagoon. Take a break from driving to relish lunch, comprising a typical Polynesian dish with a refreshing glass of punch, on the sandy stretch at Temae Beach. You could then enjoy a leisurely stroll along the sand and cool off with a swim in the crystal clear lagoon. Later, drive to Afareaitu for a short, 15-minute hike across wet grasslands to the waterfall located amid the jungle. Feel the cool spray of the water as it cascades down the rugged rock into a small pool at the bottom. You could take a quick dip before heading back to the vehicle for your return journey.
