Explore one of Guatemala’s active volcanoes on this adventurous excursion to San Vicente Pacaya. Right after an early breakfast at your hotel, take an hour’s ride to reach the magnificent Pacaya volcano. From the foothills, enjoy a relatively easy hike of approximately two hours, passing by breathtaking views of the volcanic landscape all around you. It is also possible to rent a horse from the park entrance for the ascent. Enjoy your hike through the highland pine forests, noting exciting elements such as volcanic ash and lava formations. After a hearty breakfast in Antigua, set out to explore the real Guatemala. On your way to the highlands, you will pass through spectacular landscapes. At Chichicastenango market you will get to see a vast variety of crafts and other wares made by the people of the region. Breathe in the fragrance of incense and watch the local people bargaining for souvenirs at this market which is open twice a week. You can also explore a church that is a blend of Catholic and Mayan traditions before ending your journey at Lake Atitlan. After breakfast at your hotel, set out for a leisurely boat ride of about half an hour across Lake Atitlán. Ride out to the village of San Juan La Laguna to visit a women’s textile cooperative. Watch how colorful fabrics are hand woven and dyed naturally before the traditional handloom is ready for the market. Learn about the local artistic community when you drop by the studio homes of the region’s famous naïf painters. A Mayan encounter awaits you at the town of Santiago, where you learn about the age-old culture and tradition of the T’zutujil Maya. Get to know more about the traditional handicrafts, ancient belief system and spiritualism of the local community, before returning to your hotel.
