Discover the sights and sounds of Negombo, a seaside town that showcases Sri Lanka's lively culture and heritage. Soak in the morning sea breeze as you saunter around its famed beaches, making your way to the 17th century Dutch Fort that now houses a prison. Walk past the picturesque Negombo lagoon till you arrive at the vibrant fish market where the day’s first catch of crabs, lobsters and prawns is auctioned off to the accompaniment of lively bargaining and customary jostle. Stroll along the historic Hamilton canal built by former Dutch rulers to facilitate trade and transport. Take in more of the city’s architectural heritage with a visit to St Mary’s Church that bears the distinctive Neoclassical mark of its Portuguese history. Sigiriya, which translates to Lion’s Rock, is aptly named as it juts out of a granite peak, standing tall at 180 meters and dominating the surrounding dense jungle. Witness Sigiriya Rock Fortress, which is uniquely shaped and can be seen from great distances. You can also discover the fascinating rock paintings and frescoes of Sigiri apsaras (mythical dancing damsels), painted inside the cavity of the western rock face. Discover the style of 7th to 10th century graffiti by visiting the Mirror Wall! Kindly note that this activity requires a good level of physical fitness due to the steep steps to reach the fortress. Encounter the largest and best preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka during this one hour visit! Dating back to the 1st century, the Dambulla rock caves became a Buddhist temples when they were converted into residential quarters for monks. You will be amazed by the five caves that sit under a vast overhanging rock. Each one now acts as a shrine room and contains numerous images of Lord Buddha and bodhisattvas, as well as various gods and goddesses. Mural paintings line the walls, depicting Buddha’s journey to enlightenment and his teachings. Explore a Sri Lankan jewel! Located at an altitude of almost 500 m above sea level, the ancient capital city of Kandy offers a rich amalgam of ancient wonders. Visit centuries-old famous temples and architectural marvels on a pleasant Kandy loop, past three 14th century Hindu-Buddhist temples and back through Peradeniya Botanical Gardens. Embekka Devalaya, Lankatilaka Vihara and Gadaladeniya Temples are among the other famous sites in the city. Discover fascinating traditional and contemporary motifs and colors during your visit to a local batik printing factory, before you return to your hotel.
Spend a half day at Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, a three hour drive (80km) from Negombo. Witness the biggest herd of captive pachyderms in the world who journey to the river twice a day to bathe. Managed by the Sri Lanka Wildlife Department, Pinnawala encourages both breeding and aiding the recovery and release of injured wild elephants back into the forest. The little jumbos, orphaned as their parents were victims of poachers/accidents, also splash about. Learn how they are tamed, reared and trained by their human keepers (known as mahouts) who bottle feed and bathe them. Excursions to various parts of Colombo are possible depending on the time available to you. Explore the Fort with its distinctive colonial architecture, before ambling down to the lively local markets at Pettah. If the streets are crowded, worry not! Your car is available to transport you to the varied attractions so you can avoid the rush. You can stroll along Sea Street or stop by Hindu temples and Muslim mosques that stand next to each other in this neighborhood. There is also the option of visiting the city’s landmark Town Hall and Old Parliament buildings, near Lipton Circle and Independent Square, for a better understanding of the history of this island nation. Take in the city’s posh neighborhoods around Cinnamon Gardens if you have time, or head straight for the beaches along the waterfront at Galle Face Green. Welcome to Male airport where you will be met by a representative with a paging board who will guide you to the resort's airport counter. Once your check-in formalities are complete, the resort staff will escort you to your seaplane. Please note that seaplane departure times are only provided 24 hrs before your arrival. This is a shared transfer and depending on the number of your co-passengers on the plane, you may be required to wait at the airport lounge before you can board. Your seaplane may transfer you directly to your resort or stop at another resort to drop off some of your fellow passengers. Your resort staff will confirm the timing for your seaplane departure from the resort one day in advance. Please note that seaplanes only operate between 9 am and 3 pm, and are dependent on weather conditions.
