Looking for experiences other than on Thailand beaches? We’ve got a cultural gem for you!

Every year an amazing spectacle takes over the night skies in Thailand, with the celebrations of the festival of Loy Krathong. Witness it for yourself with a private tour to Thailand.

Loy Krathong is a festival in Thailand where paper lanterns, traditionally made out of the pulp of mulberry plants or rice, are released. It’s thought to bring good luck to anyone who lights a lantern – probably because all your worries are said to float away with it!

Loy means “to float” whilst krathong refers to a lotus-shaped boat that can hold candles, traditionally made from banana leaves. The festival is an ancient practice dedicated to paying respect to water spirits.

You can watch the sky lanterns lighting up the night sky like tiny fireflies, however they are also released as floats onto rivers as they gently float until they are only a pinprick on the horizon. This is tourism in Thailand at its best.

Enchanting Travels Top Tip: The best place to witness the Loy Krathong floating lanterns festival is in Chiang Mai in northern Thailand.

The festival always occurs on the first full moon of the twelfth lunar month, which is usually during the month of November.

This is tourism in Thailand at its best.
