D I S C O V E R N E W W O R L D S Slow travel is taking the time to breathe, to love, to feel alive. Be ready to open your senses, to feel the fresh air of trees, the taste of different food, and the love of the locals. Time is always a tyrant - in every place I've been before I really would have liked to stay for a longer time! Once on a ranch in Patagonia I was able to meet a descendant of the Tehuelche Indians, a community of native South American people, and one of the last people to speak the language. He told me fascinating stories of his ancestors and legends that are shared to this day. He told me about the power of natural medicine and the natural balance of life. Beautiful stories, beautiful memories. FERNANDO PERDOMO Trip Coordinator, South America fernando@enchantingtravels.com My favorite place where time stands still is Northern Kenya, especially Laikipia Community Reserves & Laikipia Sabuk and Samburu National Reserve. It is a true time capsule in our ever changing world. Traveling there overland from the social media crazed tech hub Nairobi is to go back in time. When you reach the deserts of the north you enter a vast realm of Africa that is still barely touched by the modern way of life, and a region unknown even to most Kenyans. A real glimpse into our past, spending time with any of the 12 nomadic tribes of this immense and harsh region is an escape that I can never tire of. CORIN GALLAGHER Travel Consultant, Africa corin@enchantingtravels.com Slow travel is all about being flexible, exploring new destinations thoroughly, and having a stronger connection to the place you are visiting. I wish I could have stayed longer at the luxury beach hotel of Cape Weligama in Mirissa in Sri Lanka, which is an ideal place to relax and unwind. Its unbelievable location on a cliff overlooking the beautiful Indian Ocean, is a sight to behold. SAPNA A.K. I try to go to the same coffee shop a few mornings in a row to get into a routine and see locals going about their normal morning. I like to visit a grocery store or see a movie. Things that seem "ordinary" help you run into people going about their business and living their daily lives. It's a different way to travel and allows you to interact with people you wouldn't see by just visiting the tourist spots. In Cambodia, I was able to travel via the Bamboo Train. It's essentially two axels lashed together with bamboo branches and a small onboard motor. It travels on old train tracks, but the crazy part is that one track is used for two-way travel! If you come across another bamboo train the one that has more people and goods has the right of way. I keep a picture of that ride on my desk, where in it I have a big grin on my face! WALTER KEALEY Travel Consultant, South America walter@enchantingtravels.com I wish I could’ve stayed longer in East Asia. After living in Japan, China, and South Korea for a few years, I realized that there are so many more enchanting destinations to visit. The diversity in culture, food, music, history, and more definitely reminds me that East Asia is a destination worth continually exploring! KALANI STEPHENS Travel Consultant, Asia kalani.s@enchantingtravels.com Slow travel is just my kind of travel. For me traveling is not only about exploring new places but is also about getting to know people - their thoughts and culture - from different walks of life. The more you absorb and experience, the more you learn about life. So go slow, and give yourself a chance to experience the ‘newness’ to the core.
