27 ARTISTIC GANGLAND Experience one of the most hidden areas of Lima through an insightful tour! The coastal district of El Callao has always had a fascinating and often checkered past, and a visit today is no different! This former neighborhood used to be an influential seaport for the Spanish colonies, and boasted South America’s first major railway hub. By the 20th century, El Callao underwent a dark transformation from its grand plazas and ornate facades into a world of gangland violence, crime and poverty, caused by a lack opportunity and decay. In order to combat this new culture, project Fugaz, or Shooting Star, was pursued, bringing in a positive influence through art and culture. Fast forward to today and you will find the result of the Fugaz’s exciting vision as the streets breath cultural expression with emotive, enigmatic and powerful murals that symbolize the new beginning for El Callao. Witness this for yourself accompanied by a local guide, who is also a former piraña or gang member, and can safely take you into the neighborhood. Spend time at a micro-museum of pop-up art installations that highlight the stories and progress of Lima over the years. This unique experience is not to be missed! As you set sail from the harbor of El Callao, you will find a distinct difference from downtown Lima. There’s no hustle, no bustle, only the cold waters of La Punta Sea as you venture to nearby islands. A former naval officer will take you past San Lorenzo, Peru’s largest island and a militarized navy zone and on past El Fronton, dubbed Death Island due to it housing an offshore prison during the Spanish conquest. Head onwards to Cavinzas Island where native seabirds rest and nest before landing at the rugged and rocky outcrops of Palomino Islands, home to a huge numbers of native sea lions. Without natural predators, the colony has grown huge, creating a hilarious, honking spectacle on Palomino’s shores. If you dare brave the chill, you will be offered the chance to gear up in a wetsuit and snorkel for the ultimate aquatic adventure as you swim with these loveable and delightfully amicable sea mammals. Honk honk! ISLE OF SEA LIONS Whether it is the undiscovered streets and islands or the food you wish to feast on, a vacation in Peru is incomplete without Lima!
