BEYOND BORDERS Today, unity isn’t as crucial. We identify with our own tribe through a mix of characteristics – gender, family, locality, religion, race, political leaning and interests. These are used to forge wider tribes but similarly exist in isolated, smaller tribes. In 2016, international relations expert Parag Khanna declared on a TED stage that the lines we use to divide countries and political borders have lost their relevance. “Connectivity, not sovereignty, has become the organizing principle of the human species.” - PARAG KHANNA The world keeps changing but human beings haven’t. One thing we can do is embrace global citizenship, learn about one another, and share compassion and understanding. CULTURE IS COMMUNITY What makes us individuals are our personal experiences, and our culture. In 1860, Lazarus & Steinthal said that our personalities were developed and influenced by our culture, community and language, which is both a social product but also a means to promote specific social thought. Psychologist Wilhelm Wundt introduced the concept of Völkerpsychologie, or the collective mind. In 1950, social psychology brought to light the understanding that as a species we strive to avoid dissonance - an inconsistency that causes discomfort - by changing our thoughts and attitudes or, negatively, selectively ignore information that does not support our existing beliefs. “Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family: Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one.” – JANE HOWARD Enchanting Travels facilitates global connections, between our team, our guests and the communities we work in. Together, we are a global family, belonging and united. The ancient people knew that borders are simply geographical. KEEP DISCOVERING Travel allows us to go beyond borders and find kindred spirits across the world, who identify as global citizens. Finding common ground without destroying local identity allows us to better understand other communities and share possibilities. 9
