8 The world is getting smaller. As we grapple with new technologies and major discoveries, it is easy to become disconnected with reality. It’s time to find a relevant tribe. When the first homo sapiens evolved on Africa’s savanna plains over 200,000 years ago we lived as hunter-gatherers for several centuries. As humans, we are hardwired to fit in and belong, due to our need to survive. It was only 10,000 years ago with the invention of agriculture that we began gaining wealth, and shifted to living in highly concentrated areas with our larger populations. The desire to travel wider and conquer became a recurring theme. FINDING A TRIBE For many thousands of years, we were scattered across the earth. We used instinct to help us navigate predators and avert natural disasters. We would do everything in our power to avoid loss, as the loss of a food source or key family member would become an issue of life and death. We would look to family as the core of our society. We learnt to cooperate, exchange food with strangers and build peaceful social allies into communities. The savvy survivors would become our leaders. The values of family, community and sharing are innate fundamental principles, no matter where we are from.
